CHANDNI CHOWK
Mirza tried to wind a scarf around the cut on his arm as they rushed back to the hostel. The bastard had got the drop on him and he was not happy about it.
âStop beating yourself up. You held your own,â Himesh said.
âWho are you guys?â Atal asked as they raced through the streets. âCops? Because Iâve never seen cops like you before. Most are fat and stupid. But you messed those guys up good. Did you kill them all? It sure looked like you did, mister. Iâve never seen anyone move as fast as you.â
âYou donât ever stop talking do you?â Seeing the kid open his mouth, Mirza shook his head. âThat wasnât a question.â
Himesh stopped at a street corner and glanced around. âIâm sure we came this way.â
âI thought it was the next street.â
âWhat you looking for?â Atal asked.
âThe Palace Hotel,â Himesh snapped.
âThat dump?â
Mirza shook his head again. Atal almost sounded disappointed his new heroes didnât have a secret lair. âYou know where it is?â
âYes.â Atal held out his hand. âFor ten rupee Iâll show you.â
âWe just saved your life,â said Himesh.
The kid shrugged. âIf I canât eat I may as well be dead.â
Himesh took a note from his pocket and gave it to him. âRegular little entrepreneur, arenât you?â
âThis way.â Atal led them down the street, around a corner and into the entrance of the hostel.
âYouâre kidding me,â mumbled Himesh as they climbed the stairs. Unlocking their room, he waved Atal to one of the beds. âTake a seat.â
Mirza offered him a plastic container filled with last nightâs leftovers of naan and curry. âAre you hungry?â When the street urchin snatched it from his hands and attacked it with vigor, he chuckled. âI guess thatâs a yes.â
He smiled as he watched the boy devour the meal. He put his age at about twelve but he could have been older. Slightly built, the boy had a gaunt face with innocent brown eyes and a nasty bruise on his cheek. âYour nameâs Atal, right? Iâm Mirza and this is Himesh.â
The youngster looked up from the bowl. âYou cops? You donât look like cops.â
âNo weâre not cops. Weâre Special Agents,â said Himesh as he handed Mirza a medical kit from his bag.
He eyed them curiously as he chewed. âYou mean like CIA? Like in the movies? James Bond, Jason Bourne? Lots of guns and gadgets. You got guns?â
âYes, just like the movies.â
âSo cool.â
Mirza finished cleaning his wound and wrapped a bandage around it. âAtal, the men that attacked you, do you know who they are?â
âTheyâre with a gang.â
âCriminals?â
âYeah, thieves and body snatchers.â
âBody snatchers?â
The youth stopped with a hunk of the flat bread half way to his mouth. âThey take people. Cut out their parts to sell to rich people needing new bits. They sell anything.â He lowered his head and continued eating.
Mirza glanced at Himesh who nodded grimly.
Atal kept talking with food in his mouth. âThatâs why they were after me.â He shrugged. âOr maybe itâs because of those Pakis.
