VAWG and conflict

Focus on women, peace, and security

Introduction

This chapter focuses on responses to VAWG in conflict and post-conflict situations, looking first at the efforts of the global community, informed by UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS). UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (SCR 1325) and other WPS Resolutions are discussed and their impacts reviewed, and we also review WPS National Action Plans (NAPs). Two specific conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) initiatives are examined: UN Action and the UK-funded Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI). Throughout this chapter, the pivotal advocacy and activism of civil society are acknowledged. Without such commitment, the WPS Agenda would not have come about. It is a complex and wide-ranging field and, as such, not all aspects of VAWG and conflict are discussed.
