Chapter Sixteen

I allowed myself to indulge in my daydreams as I flew to California. What if this really worked out? Could it really work out? What were the chances? Really? And what would it be like dating one of the hottest men in the music scene today? But realistically, in all practicality, there was a big gap to bridge between his life and mine. And while it was fun to play “What if,” I scolded myself for dreaming and reminded myself that I just needed to see how this visit went and then go from there.

Liam asked if I minded meeting him outside the airport in the parking garage because paparazzi tended to lurk at the airport. I had only a carry-on, and I could walk straight out there.

I texted Liam once I landed, and he texted me where he was parked. When he saw me coming, he climbed out and jogged over to greet me. He was wearing a knit cap and sunglasses, obviously in his low-profile mode. He hugged me tightly, enveloping me in his arms. “Hi, Camille. How are you?”

I inhaled, taking in his woodsy scent. “Good.” I was a little tongue-tied. He looked good. Attractive.

“My car is over here.” He took the handle of my carry-on and led me to a black Porsche Cayenne with black tinted windows parked at the back of the parking garage. The brake lights had dark covers over them, as did the headlights. The overall feel was almost sinister.

He opened the door.

“I told my parents I’d call when I got in. I should do that now so I don’t forget.”

“Definitely. Ring them.” He turned his attention to driving.

My dad answered.

“Hey, Dad,” I said. “I made it okay.”

“And you’ll be back Sunday?”

“Yup.”

“Call and check in, okay?”

“Okay.”

“And he really has a casita with a lock on the door?”

I laughed and looked over at Liam. “You really have a casita separate from the house that has a lock on the door?”

Liam nodded in affirmation.

“Yes.”

“Just want to make sure,” my dad said.

“No worries, Dad. I promise.” I was all smiles, giddy to be there.

“Well then, have a good weekend.”

“I will, thanks. I love you, and tell Mom I love her too.”

“Okay. Bye.”

“Bye.” I hung up and laughed. “My dad.”

“Everything okay?” Liam asked. He merged onto the freeway. I had no idea where we were or where we were going.

“Yup. Everything’s good.”

“Great. Are you hungry?”

Yeah, kind of. I hadn’t eaten anything for breakfast because I was a bundle of nerves. I did manage to gnaw on a couple of the pretzels during the flight, but that was it. I nodded.

“How about sushi? Do you like sushi? We could grab some lunch.”

I bit my lip. “I’ve never had it,” I finally admitted.

“Never?” Liam looked at me in disbelief. “I love it. You want to try it?”

“I don’t know if I would like it. And I’m too nervous.”

“Nervous? You’re nervous? About what?” He squeezed my knee.

Now I felt stupid for admitting it. “Seeing you, being on an official date, that kind of stuff.
