Chapter Sixteen

Logan

I can’t stop staring at the ultrasound.

It’s been two days since we saw Dr. Bergman, and I’ve kept the images of the baby close since Hallie shared them with me. One is at home on the fridge and the other tucked safely in my desk drawer at work. Both will be put into a frame as soon as we tell our family and friends and our secret is out. Until then, I pull this one out while I’m at work and gaze down at the most magnificent sight I’ve ever seen before tucking it back into my drawer for safekeeping.

“Hey, Logan?” Chip asks from my doorway as he knocks. “Donald Smith is here and looking for a little direction on that new line of hand tools we just got in. Can you come out and help him?”

“Of course,” I reply, and follow Chip out of my office. Chip has worked for me for about six years and is a vital part of the company. He helps me with the resale side of the business but can also maneuver around the lumberyard with ease and knowledge.

I move to the large counter and find the old man waiting. “Good afternoon, Donald. I hear you’re in the market for some new hand tools?”

“Well, I’ve heard good things about this brand and wanted to check it out, especially since it’s made right here in Wisconsin,” Donald says as we walk together toward the display of Loyalty Tools.

We chat for about twenty minutes, while I demonstrate a few different pieces. He ends up choosing the basic tape measure, level, and square set, promising to come back and get more soon.

After ringing him up, I holler at Chip. “Going back to my office for a bit. Holler if you need help.”

“Sounds good,” he replies as I round the corner and move down the short hallway.

As I breach the threshold of my office, I stop in my tracks. Shay is sitting at my desk, but it’s what she’s holding in her hand that causes my heart to seize in my chest. “What the hell are you doing?”

My ex-wife’s eyes slowly move from the ultrasound photo she’s holding to me. “Well, isn’t this interesting,” she practically sings, a wicked grin spreading across her bright pink lips.

“Can I help you with something?” I ask, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Oh, don’t go all caveman on me. I came in here to leave you a note.”

“Notepads are on the desk,” I counter, blowing holes in her bullshit the size of the Grand Canyon.

“Yes, but I needed a pen,” she adds sweetly.

“Coffee cup by the phone,” I reply, pointing to where there were a dozen pens directly in front of her face.

“Oh, I didn’t see them.” Her laugh is excessive and over-the-top, a telltale sign she’s lying.

I stand here, waiting her out. I’m going to make her ask about what she’s looking at. I won’t bring it up first, mostly because the first person I talk to and tell about the baby isn’t going to be my ex-wife.
