THIRTY-FIVE
Terra contemplated what the text could mean.
âWell, what is it?â Jack sounded impatient.
She didnât blame him. âOne word. Janus.â
âWhoâs Janice?â
âNo. J-a-n-u-s.â
âWhat difference does the spelling make. Who is this person?â
âJanus is an ancient Roman god. Itâs said he has two faces, and he looks into the future and the past.â
âWhat does it mean?â he asked.
âIt means Joey sent me a cryptic message, and Iâm not sure what heâs telling me.â
She climbed all the way into her vehicle to sit and started the engine. She wasnât sure she was up for driving after todayâs events. Her legs were still shaking.
Jack was watching her much too closely. She didnât want his scrutiny.
âMeeting with Joey didnât help us to find out why two people are dead,â she said. âAt least not yet. I need to dig deeper to understand the significance behind Joeyâs cryptic text. In the meantime, I have a fragmented piece that could shed some light. If Jim was killed for it, that is. I need to get that into, um . . . my friendâs hands.â
âA friend? An expert? Come on, Terra. I need more information than that. Potentially both the victim and the suspect touched this. Itâs evidence.â
âIt needs to be analyzed, and Iâll maintain all the proper documentation. Donât worry. His name is Dr. Jeremy Brand. Heâs currently an archaeology professor at the University of Wyoming. I think heâs still in Jackson Hole leading a dig.â
âHeâs someone you keep up with then?â
âI met him during an earlier investigation with the NPS.â
Jack searched her eyes, like he often did, trying to get a read on her. âIâm going with you.â
âFine. But Iâm not going anywhere until I wash the grime away. Iâll call first. Maybe I can Skype with him or send him a picture.â
âYou donât think heâll need to get his hands on it to make an assessment?â
âOne step at a time. Iâm heading to the ranch to get cleaned up. Iâll see you later. Donât forget Owenâs party.â
Jack looked beat. But at the same time, he looked good. How did he do that?
âIâll be there,â he said. âYouâll see me tonight too. Iâm following you to your grandfatherâs to make sure you get there okay.â
âI can take care of myself.â With those words, she remembered that desperate moment when she thought she had to choose between the river and the fire, and then Jack showed up in the Huey to pull her out of deathâs reach. She had so much more she wanted to say to him, to confide, and she sensed he was holding back as well. âListen, Jack . . . I . . .â
He angled his head. âYeah?â
She couldnât hide the emotion that surged inside. And she also couldnât tear her gaze from his. Instead, she soaked in his forest-green eyes. âHow . . . how did you know?â
His brows crinkled, and he edged a little closer. âKnow what?â
Her heart rate inched up at his nearness.
Standing inside the door, Jack looked at her with such longing, Terra had the strongest urge to get out of her vehicle and get closer to him again.
