GRANNY KNOT

Other than being one of the most common knots that can be tied, there is little good that can be said about the Granny Knot. It is mentioned here mostly so that you will recognize it and thus be able to avoid it. It should never be used under a load or in any type of life safety situation. It looks deceptively like a Square Knot (see page 79), but is even less trustworthy than the already inferior Square Knot. The key visual difference is the lack of symmetry in the Granny Knot.

1Cross the two ends of the same rope, one over the other, in this case left over right.
