A Brief Detour: Creating a New Column from an Existing Column

The title column includes the data we want, but it’s not tidy. An entry like “Toy Story (1995)” contains two attributes of the film within one column. For data management and analysis, it is preferable to separate the two data elements into two columns. In JMP, this requires a simple formula. Fortunately, every title follows the same format of “title (yyyy)”. To create a column of release years, we want to extract four digits from the last five characters of the title field. Because the years are discrete and we intend to use individual years for filtering, we’ll make the new column ordinal.

Let’s do this operation on the full table of movieratings rather than the subset we just created, so that it will be possible to use the new release year data in other ways as well.

1. Make movieratings the active table.

2. Select Cols ► New Column to open the New Column dialog (Figure 8.6), and give the new column a descriptive name like year.
