Marlon couldn’t explain it, but it felt different walking into Holy Ghost Temple’s sanctuary with the girls and Portia. Instead of attending the children’s classes, the girls begged to remain in the “big” church with them. He consented after consulting with Portia.

The sisters who would have made a beeline toward them, stood on the sideline, eying their competition without Portia having a clue. There was no contest. Portia Hunter was in a class all by herself.

He waved at his family who usually saved a seat for him. Since there were five of them today, Marlon staked claim to the pew behind the Washingtons. Derek, Robyn and his mother greeted Portia warmly.

The atmosphere was charged with energy after the praise team led the congregation through a variety of worship songs.

Pastor Kinder approached the podium. “Whew. Did we just get a spiritual workout in the presence of the Lord, or what?” He scanned the sanctuary, nodding. “That same workout needs to be our routine regimen, if we’re to fight the wickedness that seems to reign in our world today. It’s predicted, but God promises His strength to be overcomers. In a few days, people across the country will celebrate Halloween, the spirit of witchcraft. Let this celebration be not named among the saints.”

The chorus of “Amens” were loud throughout the sanctuary. His family was no exception, especially since they honored God before the devil had his reign for a night.

Pastor Kinder directed them to Ephesians six. “God talks about spiritual armor to fight. Our enemies today aren’t a particular country, but a mindset. Verse twelve lets us know what we’re up against. ‘For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.’ These are the last days, and the love of many are waxed cold, so don’t be surprised by the abundance of wickedness, be vigilant...”

Marlon wasn’t expecting to hear this message, but as his mother reminded him from time to time, “God tells us what He wants us to know. Pay attention!”

Portia seemed as riveted throughout the sermon until the pastor closed his Bible and asked everyone to stand for the altar call. Numerous people hurried toward the front for prayers from waiting ministers. He had been in that prayer line several times after the demise of his marriage until he surrendered his burdens, confessed his sins, and consented to the baptism in Jesus name and God filled his mouth with His heavenly language. To his surprise, armed with spiritual strengths didn’t stop the devil from taunting him.

As he witnessed dozens to be buried in water in Jesus’ name for their sins to be washed away, his heart pounded as a couple of them emerged , speaking in a heavenly language the Holy Ghost was orchestrating as evidence of His presence.

I can keep you from falling, and present you faultless before Me, God whispered and directed him to Jude 1. This time, you have to want to be kept!

Marlon’s eyes misted.
