Zakarov Compound

Kungrad, Uzbekistan

Jamie and her team took a longer route to get to Zakarov’s compound in Uzbekistan from Clement’s house in Khorog, Tajikistan. The straightest path would have taken them across the border at Panjakent. Jamie’s credit card was compromised, so she assumed her passport was also. Fuller would likely have someone at the border ready to detain her if she tried to cross it.

Driving a large truck over the Tajik and Fann mountains was iffy at best. The narrow roads with the sheer drop-offs would mean certain death if a vehicle lost the slightest bit of control.

Ironically enough, Clement had been helpful in determining the route. He had smuggled his stolen art into and out of Tajikistan on numerous occasions and knew the best ways to go to avoid the authorities. Initially, Jamie had been skeptical of his suggestion, but after considering all other options, she ended up taking his recommendation. It worked out. They crossed the border into Turkmenistan, traversed the Karakum desert, and entered Uzbekistan at the sparsely populated northwest border. No one would be looking for her there.

The guys weren’t as happy with the route since they had to drive the large truck filled with paintings across the desert. Colonel, in particular, didn’t like the fact that between them, they only had four handguns and the two assault rifles they found in Clement’s house that belonged to the two dead Russians.

His concern was probably warranted. If they had encountered hostile enemies along the way, their odds were not good if they had to go into a fight with so little firepower. It turned out to be a moot point since all they saw were villages and camels.

The issue of limited firepower had now reared its ugly head for a second time while they were surveilling Zakarov’s compound.

“I have good news and bad news,” Colonel said. He and Bond had just returned to Jamie’s location after circling the compound on foot. “Which do you want to hear first?”

“Always start with the good news,” Jamie said. Alex would’ve said start with the bad news first. The two of them were opposite when it came to most things.

“The good news is that Zakarov is probably here at the compound,” Colonel said.

“Why do you say that?” Jamie had to ask, even though it was good news.

“The place is crawling with guards. We counted at least two dozen men armed with HK 417 assault rifles. They wouldn’t have that much firepower guarding the house if he wasn’t there.”

“What’s the bad news?” she asked.

Colonel smirked, then grimaced. “There are two dozen men armed with HK 417 assault rifles guarding the house.”

Jamie wasn’t surprised that an arms dealer would outfit his security with one of the best assault rifles available.

“That is a problem,” Jamie said. “We can’t match that. We don’t have the firepower to take them on.”

“We could if we still had the plane,” Colonel said.

He was right. There had been plenty of firepower on their plane. A moot point since it was no longer on the ground in Turkey.
