Chapter 26
âWell, thatâs strange,â Lukas said. âWhatâs going on?â
They had just come to the crest of a low rise. There in the distance was Qarath. But instead of the siege they were expecting, they saw the Samkaran army marching through the open gates into the city.
âDid the city fall already?â Gage asked.
âNo way those walls fell that fast, not without siege engines,â Strout declared. âAnd even then it would take longer than this, unless the king of Qarath is a complete idiot.â
âMacht Rome is the greatest leader weâve ever had,â Randel said.
âMaybe Qarath surrendered,â Noah said.
âWhy would they do that?â Lukas asked.
âAnd who is that?â Gage asked, pointing at the large dust cloud to the south.
âThat has to be another army,â Strout said. âThe question is who.â
âIt looks like our army is hurrying to get into the city before they get here,â Lukas said. He looked at Cowley. âDo you think that means weâre allies with the Qarathians now?â
Cowley shrugged. âIt sure looks like it.â
âI donât understand,â Gage said. âLowellin told the general to besiege the city. Why would Kemp go against his orders?â
âMaybe because whoever is coming poses a bigger threat,â Cowley said.
âWe can sit here and talk about this all day,â Strout said, âbut if we donât get moving, weâre going to get left outside.â He spurred his horse forward, but Cowley put up a hand to stop him.
âHold on.â
Strout gave him a dark look. âWhy?â
âI donât know,â Cowley said. âI want to think about this some more.â
âWhatâs there to think about? Our army is marching into the city. We came here to join up with them, but weâre going to lose our chance.â
âNo. We came here to see if we could find Fen and the others and help them.â
âThey might already be in the city,â Lukas said. He looked like he wanted to get into the city too. Cowley didnât blame him. The thought of being trapped out here with an unknown enemy wasnât a pleasant one.
âI donât think so,â Cowley said.
âBut you donât know.â Strout wheeled his horse and came back to Cowley. âWeâre running out of time. You need to make a decision. Whatâs it going to be?â
Cowley nodded. âWeâre staying out here.â
âBased on what?â Strout demanded.
âI donât think Fen is in there. If we go in, weâre stuck. We wonât be able to help Fen and the others.â
âI agree with Cowley,â Batu piped up. âI think being trapped in the city is a bad idea.â
Strout gave him a dark look, then turned back to Cowley. âI hope youâre sure about that.â
âNo, Iâm not,â Cowley admitted. âI wish I was, but Iâm not. But Iâve made my decision.â
âIf Fen is in there,â Noah said, âhe wonât be bothered by a little siege. He can crush that whole army by himself.â
âWith help from Karliss,â Batu added.
âAnd Aislin,â Randel said.
âI want to get closer, though,â Cowley said. âLetâs head for the patch of trees over there.â
⬠⬠â¬
âDamn,â Noah said. âI was hoping theyâd kill that bloody sorcerer.
