CHAPTER 34

Nora's watch read 11:32. She had overslept. There was another sharp rat-ta-tat-tat along with a woman's voice, "Housekeeping."

The door opened two inches before catching on the flimsy metal latch and Nora bolted to the door as the housekeeper tried to enter. "No thank you. I don't need anything. Please, don't come back." The woman left mumbling something in Spanish.

With a sigh of relief, she returned to Toby's crypod feeling more reassured as she watched the white mist still in circulation. She took one of the two extra batteries and slipped it into a second slot on the unit but no green light showed. Pulling the dead battery back out, she plugged it into the wall charger but nothing happened. Frowning, Nora inserted another full battery and put the depleted one on to recharge.

Shaking her head, she turned the bad black square over in her hands scolding herself for not taking more. She must figure something out and she dropped it in the waste can with a jarring clunk.

Nora picked up her cell phone and dialed a familiar number. “Hi, Erin," she said, doing her best to keep her voice sounding casual.

“Hey, you. How's it going?"

"Going well, thanks." Nora began pacing as Erin launched into the description of a custom jewelry party she was hosting at her home along with plenty of wine and cheese and how much fun it would be.

"This Friday evening?"

"Uh-huh."

"Sorry, I can't. I already have plans. Maybe another time."

Erin smiled. "I'd like to say that I'm shocked, but I wanted to at least ask. So, you have a question for me?"

Nora stared at Toby. "I do. Any update from your colleague?"

"Not since we talked last. What's the rush?"

"The parents are having a hard time waiting."

"Well, I'll call if something breaks," Erin said. "I've got to run to a meeting. I'll talk to you later."

"Sure, okay."

After hanging up, she ran her hand over the smooth top of the crypod and peered into the little boy — like she had at The Postponement Center for so many years. "Just a little while longer," she whispered.

After dressing herself and securing Toby under the lime blanket, Nora went to a credit union branch — a different location from the one visited during her lunch the day before. She knew of the governmental reporting required by the federal government with cash transactions over ten thousand dollars. Yesterday she withdrew nine thousand, nine hundred dollars, but it probably wouldn't matter anyway as Nora planned to remain off the grid for a while.

She had removed all the money from her bedroom safe and taken advances on each of her credit cards. Not sure how much she would need, once found out, going into any financial institution or using plastic would be impossible. Nora knew her FICO score and credit absolutely would be ruined, she would sort that all out later. If there had only been more time to prepare.

She hoped the almost four hundred thousand dollars in her TPC 401k retirement plan would not be seized.
