Dear Ella,

Answers below in mint green (of course). It’s weird being a world away and not knowing what’s happening with you. So it’s your turn. What’s going on with Alex? Are you excited to start at a new school? What have I missed while I’m over here eating gelato?

I totally meant to get back to writing my blog posts after lunch, but there was an e-mail from Ella in my in-box. She must have written back the second she got up this morning. I opened it as soon as I saw the subject line: Tell me everything!

It was full of questions like:

What’s going on with Logan?

What’s next on the list?

Do you know if you’re staying in Italy?

So I changed the font color and answered every question in mint green:

Nothing.

Not sure.

Not yet.

But as I look over my responses now, I realize I haven’t given her much information (unlike this morning’s e-mail to her), so I go back and elaborate. Then I ask her more of my own questions.

I know she probably won’t write back right away, but I stare at my computer screen anyway, missing home a little bit. Okay, maybe a lot. And even though I’m not quite sure we’d be hanging out together if I were there, missing Ella.

I pull my laptop screen down low enough to see that Logan is hard at work. He gives his keyboard a big tap with his pointer finger and leans back in his chair across the table from me.

“Aaaaand, done,” he says. “Post number seven, finito. ”

“You’re done with your seventh post?” I ask.

“But it’s only been a little over a week, and we still have until next Friday to get all of them finished.”

“I like to get things done early,” he says. “Bad habit my parents instilled in me.” His sarcastic smile is totally adorable.

While I’m secretly panicking inside that now I’m way, way behind in the interns race, I can’t help but get all flirty right back. I guess the real Skyler is still in there somewhere.

“Well, I think it’s an admirable trait,” I say, leaning on the table. My phone goes off before I can really turn on the charm.

A text from Gino.

Are we still on for an Italian lesson tomorrow?

I eye my computer screen. My totally blank computer screen. Logan is on post number seven, and Zara’s probably well into double digits just to earn extra credit. I’ve finished exactly three posts. Three.

Ugh. Can’t. I have a TON of writing to do.

So far only one of my post ideas has to do with learning Italian, and I’d planned to write at least two more, so I text again.

Maybe Friday?

I add a smiley-face emoji to make sure he knows I still very much want his help. Need his help.

When I look up again, Logan is gone, but all of his stuff is still here. It’s easy to spot his backpack with the Australian flag on the side. I wish I knew more about Australia. I probably should have paid more attention in social studies.
