CHAPTER NINE
CAPTURE
Andy swung his sword at Violet. âLet him go.â
âIâd rather not,â Violet said, twirling a blonde wave with her fingers. âSatyr, take your arrow and point the tip at your own throat. If either of your former companions try to hurt me, stop you, or run away, I want you to skewer yourself.â
Darko raised the arrow to his neck. âAnything for you.â
âNo!â Andy cried. âDonât hurt him!â
Violet strode toward Andy. âMy, my, this is a strange development: the pig-faced mortal boy seems to care for the incompetent satyr. Didnât you know the gods would have you both killed for less?â
âPlease,â Andy said. âStop.â
The demigod laughed. âIf you donât want the satyr harmed, then Iâd advise you to drop your weapons.â Andy threw his sword to the ground, while Kali tossed her spear aside. âOh, get rid of the dagger too.â
Andy took the knife from his belt and pitched it into the dirt. âOkay. Weâre unarmed. Now would you please let Darko go?â
âTell me,â Violet started, eyeing the groupâs supplies bags, âwhat do those packs carry?â
âOur stuff,â Andy said.
âEmpty them, or the satyr dies.â
Kali put a hand on Andyâs shoulder. âAndy, Iâm not sure we should do as she says,â she whispered. âThe Helm.â
âI know what you mean,â he replied. âBut we canât just let her kill Darko. Besides, even if we did fight, she might have more of those dart things, knock us out, and get someone else to take the Helm anyway. At least this way we can fight later.â
After coming to the agreement that it was better to save Darkoâs life instead of overpowering the demigod, Andy and Kali did as Violet instructed: they opened the bags and dumped out the contents inside. Their things came tumbling to the forest floor, including the Helm of Darkness.
Violet burst into a fit of cackling. âOh my gods, youâre the two mortals from the Before Time, arenât you?â
âIâm not,â Kali said.
âBut he is, isnât he?â Violet continued, pointing at Andy. âDoes this mean the Daughter of Apollo is in Hephaestus City? It must. Tell me, did you really think youâd be able to get away with such heinous crimes?â
âItâs not like you can take the Helm from us, anyway,â Andy blurted out, desperation flooding his senses. âAnd Iâm sure you know that. Diana does, and Spencer did. You canât touch it. Itâll suck your life force away.â
âI may not be able to,â Violet replied, âbut there are others who can. You, the girl, and the satyr.â She pointed at Darko. âSatyr! Grab the Helm of Darkness, conceal it inside one of the bags, and carry it for me. As for the two of you,â she continued, looking to Andy and Kali. âThe Olympians will be pleased when I deliver you to them in chains.â
