Things had been pretty quiet at the morgue, but it was early in the morning. There was still the potential for plenty of excitement. Dr. Wiltshire was not yet in. Kenzie was nearly finished going through the latest emails to make sure that she had a good handle on what would need to be done during the day. She was glad she had taken the time to clear the decks the night before, even though it had made her late getting home when they had been planning to have Tyrrell over for dinner. It was good that she hadn’t remembered that at the time, or she would have been flustered and in a hurry to get out. That was when mistakes were most likely to be made.

And it had all turned out well. Zachary and Tyrrell were perfectly capable of getting dinner ready. Lisa might sigh in exasperation over Kenzie making a guest help prepare his own dinner, but that hadn’t been Kenzie’s choice. And Tyrrell wasn’t a guest; he was family. He had lived there for a few weeks before Kenzie had gotten him into the rehab facility. Once someone had lived there, he belonged. He had been in the kitchen. He had prepared his own meals there. What was the point of acting like he was a visiting dignitary?

All in all, the evening had worked out nicely, and she had been much more relaxed going to bed after having her job threatened than she would have predicted.

The phone rang and Kenzie picked it up. “Medical Examiner’s Office.”

“MacKenzie.”

Kenzie looked at the call display. “Dad. What are you doing calling me on this line?”

“Well,” he sounded amused, “you weren’t picking up your cell phone.”

“Yeah… I have my cell phone set to do not disturb because I am working.”

“Can I interrupt you for five minutes, just to see how my daughter is doing?”

Kenzie suspected an ulterior motive, but she didn’t yet know what it was. “Your daughter is doing fine. Is that all, then?”

He chuckled. “Who raised you to be such a smart mouth?”

Kenzie had to laugh at herself too. “Well, I might have been raised by two strong adults who believe in speaking their minds and taught me not to be a shrinking violet.”

“Might have,” he admitted.

“Oh, speaking of my two parents…” Kenzie remembered her last conversation with Lisa. “Didn’t you tell me that Mother had asked you to get me to sign those papers right away last week?”

“I probably did. I don’t recall. They’re not still waiting, are they? I really think you need to take your responsibilities with the foundation seriously.”

“They’re done. I did get them back to Mother. But she said that she didn’t ask you to call me about them; you just took it upon yourself.”

“I don’t recall the conversation,” he said without concern. “It might have just been a throwaway comment like, ‘I hope MacKenzie can get these back to me right away.’ I honestly don’t remember. Does it matter?”

“I just… don’t like you getting between Mother and me.
