Hannah almost didn’t hear the quiet knock at the front door over the sound of both twins crying. But when it came again, a little more insistent this time, Hannah paused the game she was playing on her phone to answer it. She swung open the door and was shocked to see Sophia standing there.

“Hi.” Sophia held out a square blue envelope.

“Hi.” Hannah noticed that something was different about Sophia. She seemed quiet, or almost . . . shy?

Hannah took the envelope. “What’s this?” she asked. It wasn’t sealed, but she didn’t open it right away.

“An invitation to Louie’s party,” Sophia said. “You should come. And bring Poppy.”

Louie’s party? Hannah thought. Are dog parties really a thing? But she didn’t say that out loud. “Sure,” she replied. “We’ll be there. Thanks!”

“Okay, bye.” With a nod, Sophia turned and headed back down the street. Hannah shut the door and leaned against it. After all the fun they’d had at the beach with Poppy, maybe she and Sophia were becoming friends after all.

Hannah looked at the envelope in her hand. It was addressed to her and Poppy in neat block letters. The card inside had a border of dog bones with ribbons tied around them.
