Chapter Five

Tension hung in the air between them. Polly stared at Morgan’s back as he headed along the bank, following the river downstream. She wanted to say something, but what could you say after practically throwing yourself on a man and him then walking away?

Polly didn’t regret the kiss. She was glad she had done it, especially now that she knew Morgan was just as affected by the kiss as she was. But now her nerves were starting to take over. Had she done wrong? Had she ruined whatever they had between them? How she hoped she hadn’t. Morgan may have responded strongly to the kiss, but now he had withdrawn so much she was beginning to worry.

They were going to be having a very long talk later, she just knew it. Right now, they had a job to do, someone to look for. Thinking about an impending conversation was not going to help. It certainly didn’t help that Polly couldn’t stop thinking about the touch of his lips. She touched her own lips, remembering the moment Morgan cradled her in his arms. A smile spread across her face.

It was certainly worth it.

Soon, the trees ended and the river widened and ran down into a waterfall, spreading out into a lagoon below. It was surrounded by emerald green grass with white rocks that seemed to glow like gems under the sun. Polly stared in amazement.

“Whoa. This is beautiful.”

“I love this place and always think of it as a little slice of heaven.” Morgan glanced over his shoulder. It was the first time he had looked at her since their kiss. “But it’s barely used. It’s a popular place for wild animals, especially wolves and mountain lions. It’s not a good idea to be out here alone when there are so many predators looking for their next meal.”

Polly shuddered. “I think I’ve gone off the place now.”

“I don’t blame you.” Morgan shook his head. “I remember my brothers and I coming here a few times when we were young, thinking we would be fine. We didn’t get on with Father back then, either. It was only when Ernest got bitten by a mountain lion that tried to drag him away, that we realized that his fears weren’t unfounded.”

Polly stared at him. “Ernest was almost killed by a mountain lion?”

“It ripped into his arm.” Morgan tapped his arm. “You must have seen the scars.”

“I have, and he told me the story, but I thought it was him trying to flirt with me.”

Morgan laughed. That simple sound had Polly resisting the urge to shiver as warmth tickled down her spine.

“My brother’s attentions have been firmly on Jacira since she came into town, even if he won’t openly admit it. When he says something, he certainly means it.”

“Well, now I feel a fool for telling him off for selling such a tale.” Polly looked at a gathering of rocks across the lagoon. “What’s over there? It looks like a series of caves.”

“That’s right. It’s where a wolf pack was taking shelter during the night or when it’s very hot.
