Chapter 62

‘That was such fun. We should hang out more.’ With a hug and a kiss, Lila Taylor was saying goodbye to her niece, Kate, in the hallway of Danielle and Kate’s townhouse in Brooklyn.

‘I hope she was good for you, sis?’ Danielle asked.

‘Oh, the very best,’ said Lila. ‘And I can’t wait to meet this dog called Glenda. She sounds super cool. I heard all about her.’

‘Oh, she’s super cool, all right,’ Danielle said, smiling. ‘Glenda and Kate are great friends. Hey, thanks so much for helping out, sis. I got a lot done.’

‘No prob, hun. My pleasure,’ Lila replied, opening the front door. ‘Oh, and Glenda’s friend, John, sounds like he’s cute too,’ she added, winking at Danielle.

‘Yes, he’s real nice,’ Danielle said, unable to stop herself blushing. ‘And that looks like your Uber,’ she added, spotting a car pulling up at the gate, and glad of the distraction. ‘Be careful and don’t stay out too late. Where you off to?’

‘Just a few drinks in Williamsburg. See ya, sis,’ she said, pecking Danielle on the cheek. ‘Bye, Kate. Thanks for the chat. I’ll see you soon.’

‘Bye, Auntie Lila,’ Kate said, waving.

Danielle watched Lila climbing into the back of the car and got a final wave through the window. She still worried about her ‘little sister’ Lila, and she guessed she’d never grow out of that. The two had grown up as if they were twins, always looking out for each other. They had developed a kind of sixth sense between them. They hardly needed to speak to each other, they just seemed to know what the other was thinking. What was funny was that they could be so close, yet so different. While Danielle operated out of the logical side of her brain and had been drawn towards accountancy, Lila was creative and carefree, made a good living as an interior designer, and spent most of her spare time painting. Lila was much taller, with a dark complexion. People often couldn’t believe that they were sisters. And they had grown even closer over the last couple of years, during the break-up of Danielle’s marriage. Danielle would never forget her sister’s rock-solid support.

Standing in shadows, fifty yards down the street, Fallah watched the goodbyes and saw the Uber depart.

While Danielle was preparing spaghetti bolognese for dinner, Lila arrived outside The Forge, a bar in the trendy Williamsburg district, on the Brooklyn side of the bridge. The bar was a redevelopment of an old mill building, all exposed brick and timber floors, modern art, and loud hip-hop music. She spotted her three girlfriends at a wooden table, pulled in a chair and ordered a bottle of her favourite craft beer.

The pals were having great fun, talking and laughing, and Lila was telling them about her gorgeous niece Kate, when the conversation was interrupted by a disturbance on the far side of the bar. Voices were raised, and a woman screamed. People were standing up to see what was going on, but Lila and her friends couldn’t see much from where they were.
