Outro: Voices are important. They can yell, shout, scream, cry, and talk. The voices and experiences of Black people are vast. This poem utilizes the image of water to show the vastness of the Black experience and Black culture. Black culture, just like water, seeps into many aspects of society.

Track 5: Loophole of Retreat

Joy Priest

Every Black girl needs a loophole

in the fabric of reality. A special room

where her world is what she imagines,

a place to slip inside, a secret kept

with oneself, a portal out of captivity.

Harriet Jacobs waited in the garret

of her grandmother’s house for seven

years to escape to freedom. With

only the world she could imagine

to occupy her mind, with only

muffled voices and mice for company.

Denver found an emerald room

of boxwood bushes, where she hid

the scent of wild veronica and herself

from the hurt world, from fear and grief: —

What will be your special place? Dark

hideaway? Hidden room of trees?

What kind of world will you imagine

in your Black girl portal, hiding free?
