“Regina, please, can you gimme a sec? I ain’t been here in a week. Can I at least settle my behind in the chair?”

I was so tired it didn’t make sense. And that wasn’t Regina’s fault, but it was still true. My thighs felt like I’d been on a treadmill for three days straight when they’d actually been locked around Kenny’s head. And I thought I’d have at least a day to get acclimated to things. But that wasn’t how it worked in my profession. More work was always waiting on both ends of the desk.

“I’d love to lick your wounds, Ms. ‘lemme take a vacation out of nowhere and leave the office in disarray’.” She threw up air quotes and rolled her eyes up to the ceiling, standing in front of my desk, cradling a stack of paperwork that needed my signature yesterday. “But I have a stack of work myself to cry over. Wanna see it?”

“No.” I rolled my eyes and extended a hand to accept the heap of cases I’d have to look over, sign, and hand back to her by the end of the day so she could distribute them to appropriate caseworkers. “But could you bring me a cup of coffee?” I asked.

“I guess.” She released the papers into my hand then spun away on her medium to low heels, high-waist dress slacks fooling folks into thinking she had an ass when anybody’d who’d seen her in a pencil skirt knew better.

“Thank you, Regina.” I parted my lips for a less than energized smile, blowing my bangs up and into the air when I saw the name on the first file.

It had been two solid weeks since I last saw Bryan and Bella, and I missed them more than I thought I would. Our office had to do routine welfare checks considering Kearston’s admitted state of depression in the wake of all that had happened. I’d been meaning to stop by and check on them myself, but I wasn’t sure how she’d take it. It still felt too soon, and I couldn’t help thinking she might still resent me for stopping her from blowing Rodney’s head off.

“Here’s your coffee. Need anything else?” Regina placed a lidded cup of freshly brewed coffee on my desk.

“No,” I replied, looking up from Bryant and Bella’s file. “Not unless you have another week of vacation time to throw my way.” I smiled with my eyes.

“Girl, bye. We’re fresh out!” She smirked, pivoting, turning, and walking out of my office with smoke rising under her feet.
