16. Jackie - Prison Visit 4
The next morning, I made my Saturday trek to Wheeler. The previous week, still angry with Aaron, I had skipped the visit but didnât derive any pleasure from it. If I had to admit it, I liked the pattern of Friday night R.A.D. classes and Saturday morning prison visits. At least this schedule was giving my weekends some punctuation instead of having them all run together. For the first time in a long time, I wasnât living for Monday, when Iâd be back at work and not stuck alone and trying to fill the days. I knew most people looked forward to their weekends, but for a long time, Iâd dreaded those two full days by myself.
Once Iâd gone through the security process, I waited for Aaron to be escorted in by Cyrus and the other guard. This time, there was another inmate a few seats down, dressed in orange, visiting with an elderly black woman, probably his mother.
I didnât have a lot of news for Aaron. I could tell him about getting the paint samples tested, but that was all I had. I wouldnât tell him about the weird thing that had happened at his studio. There was nothing to be gained by making him worry about me or his place.
When Aaron entered the room, he didnât look me in the eyes. It was like our first visit, when he couldnât bear to face me. Slowly, he raised his head and apologized. âIâm sorry about last time,â he said. âI should haveâ¦â
His voice trailed off. Then he said, âWell, Iâm glad you came back.â
I nodded and smiled. Throughout our four years of high school, weâd never disagreed. The episode during my last visit felt like our first fight, and today was the first time we made up. Strangely, it endeared him to me even more. I could tell that we were both ready to put it behind us. Before I could reply, Aaron reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a sheet of parchment paper and slid it through the slot in the window. This time the passage was from Genesis, an account of the family line of Abrahamâs son, Isaac, and his wife, Rebekah.
By this point, he was receiving one of these cryptic notes every few weeks. But I had no idea why they began showing up just after he first contacted me, and if there was any connection.
âWhatâs it about this time?â I asked.
Aaron didnât reply. Instead, he slipped me the envelope it was mailed in. âDo you have any way to track it?â he asked.
I looked at the white legal-size envelope that had no return address and a blurred post-mark and said, âI can try.â Learning about post office markings would certainly take up a good portion of my Sunday.
âWhy this passage?â I wondered aloud.
Aaron shrugged. Instantly, I recalled my frustration from the last visit. With his life on the line, why wasnât he taking more responsibility? He wanted to leave all the work to me, repeating our pattern from high school.
