CHAPTER 8

DANIEL PULLED LILY through the fire station door and enveloped her in a bear hug. “Did you do like I asked?”

She nodded. “I got her to agree to some self-defense pointers this evening.” Lily planted a hand on her hip and demanded, “Now, are you going to tell me what’s going on?”

Daniel exchanged a glance with Chance. “We might have a situation here in Hellfire, and I don’t want Lola to get caught in the middle of it. And if she does, I’m hoping your training tips help to keep her safe, in case one of us can’t get to her soon enough.” He went on to explain about Mateo’s vow for vengeance and how he included family and loved ones in his reign of terror.

Lily’s eyes widened as she listened. “What does this have to do with Lola?” She glanced between Chance and Daniel. “Mateo is mad at you. As far as I know, you don’t have a wife or family in Hellfire. Why would he target Lola?” Her eyes narrowed as she stared into Daniel’s eyes. “Unless, there’s something going on between you and Lola.” Her face lit in a broad grin. “Is there? Is that what you’re afraid of? Wow. I’m gone couple of months and everything changes.” She shook head and frowned. “Does Lola know all this? I’m sure she would like to know she’s in danger.”

Daniel shook his head. “I didn’t want to worry her any sooner than I had to. Mateo might not even show up.”

Lily crossed her arms over her chest and pressed her lips into a firm line. “I’d want to know, if it were me.”

Daniel nodded. “You’re right. I’ll tell her tonight. I just can’t be seen with her, in case Mateo has people watching my every move.”

“Do you want me to tell her?” Lily asked. Then she shook her head. “No, it would be better coming from you, since you’re the one who dumped her and broke her heart.”

“I didn’t break her heart. She said she didn’t want to start a relationship. She should be happy I backed out of our date.”

“Tell me you didn’t stand her up?” Lily shook her head. “And you asked her out?” She whacked his shoulder. “Jerk. All you had to do was tell her what was happening.”

“I know I was a jerk. I needed her to think I was a jerk so she’d hate me and no one would think I had feelings for her.”

“Ha!” Chance burst out. “So, you admit it.” He laughed. “I knew you had it bad for the pretty widow. You looked like you wanted to punch me last night when I was dancing with her.” Chance tilted his head. “She’s a good dancer, and she’s got a great body. I don’t know why I didn’t notice before.”

Daniel punched him in the arm a little more forcefully than a good-natured poke. “Back off.”

“Or what? You might have blown your chances with the lady. I can be there to pick up the pieces.
