CHAPTER FOUR:

The old woman

As we made our way towards the source of the smokestack, we came upon this block cabin with no discernible door or windows to speak of. We all looked at each other kind of strangely, wondering what our next move was going to be, when Tommy took that decision out of our hands. He walked up to the side of the building and kicked at it with his foot. “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and blow your house down.” He turned us with a smirk, obviously enjoying using a phrase from an old fairy tale. He was now the big bad wolf and inside were the three little pigs safely secured inside their concrete bunker.

Tommy has his head towards us, smiling like the cat that ate the canary, when suddenly an opening appeared and this strange little woman stood in front of Tommy. Taking her cane, she struck him in the stomach, making all the air come out of his lungs. “OHHHHHH…what’s with the cane old lady?”

“Who are you calling old lady and you’d think that for somebody so young that you would have more respect for your elders. Why have you come here and interrupted my dinner?” She looked like the wicked witch of the west, a gray shawl over her shoulders and a mane of straggly white hair on her head, not to mention the weird little cane that she was swinging in the air. It had carvings of people screaming etched into the wood and in my head I could hear those people letting out the anguished cries of their last words.

“Help us…help us…help us.” It was like a whisper in the wind, but this time I could see that both Amy, Tommy and Cheryl were hearing the exact same thing. It was eerie and almost made the cane seem like it was a living entity onto itself.

“Don’t mind them, because they have no manners like you do.” She slapped the cane down onto the floor and just like that the voices that we had been hearing in the wind ceased. I don’t like talking to strangers, so say what you need to say and be on your…wait…has she been bitten by a spider?” Her question caught us off guard and she was now motioning us to come in with her bony finger, which for some reason we did without question or hesitation. “Bring her in and lay her down gently and I will try to find that god forsaken potion that I have around here somewhere. Can any of you tell me how long she has been like this?” For a woman that didn’t want us to be here in the first place, she was awfully concerned about Becky, but it wasn’t like we were going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Stepping forward, I said “I’m not exactly sure how long it’s been and time is kind of the one thing around here that goes by very quickly. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say at least a few hours, but like I said I can’t be entirely sure.
