Chapter 15

Thanksgiving Day arrived, and with it, The Gauntlet challenge number one. After waiting in suspense for days and days to find out what Apple had concocted for her, Meg had finally been informed via text of her first test. Honestly she was relieved.

She could bake a damn pie.

It was totally an ace up her sleeve that nobody knew her secret. “Tell me again why we’re having your family Thanksgiving here at my ranch?” She asked Aidan, although she wasn’t complaining since it was her first turkey day in years. It was merely a surprise.

“Because my mom and Apple’s parents are in Paris for aunt Sedona’s gallery show. And because Apple nearly had a meltdown over it. I think with this being Jake’s first holiday since his dad passed she’s determined to make it as family oriented as she can.”

“Okay, I get that. But what about the pies? That woman had me bake three different kinds even though she’s bringing her own.” Meg pointed to them sitting on the counter looking rather yummy if she did say so herself. “Apple, pecan, and pumpkin.”

Aidan glanced at the desserts cooling on the counter. “Honestly I’m surprised you knew how.”

That was exactly what Apple had been hoping when she’d decided pie baking was Gauntlet Challenge number one. Silly woman.

“I roomed with a woman from Yorkshire for about a year who was an incredible cook. She taught me the basics and then a few special tricks.” Baking apple pies that made people cry they were so good was one of them. The secret was in the dash of apple cider vinegar she added to the filling mixture.

“I’ll have to try one.”

Meg agreed. “Yes, you will. Several in fact.” Apple was bringing her pies and so was Sean’s fiancée, Shannon. “Your cousin wants to hold a friendly competition to see whose tastes the best. You’ve already been dubbed a tester.”

“Well, that sucks,” Aidan said with a grin, looking ridiculously handsome in his charcoal grey sweater. The way his pecs were showcased against the soft-looking fabric made her want to run her hands all over his chest. For starters.

“Somehow I think you’ll manage.” Meg drawled.

Brody started barking then, signaling company was arriving. “Thank you, buddy.” Aidan called out to his dog.

The door swung open and a flurry of activity bustled through. It seemed everyone had decided to arrive at once. Waffles and Dregs were the first to enter, followed by Apple and Jake, and then Sean and Shannon. As soon as she heard their voices a jolt of nervousness darted through her. Which was silly. These were people she’d known forever (minus Sean and Shannon). And though it was still in dispute with the attorneys, this was her home. Why should she be nervous?

Because she wanted everyone to like her. Plain and simple. Aidan was a loyal guy with a tight-knit circle of friends and family. They wouldn’t make room for just anyone. Especially someone with such a mark against her to begin with. Like her.

“I smell turkey.
