WHERE’D YOU GO?

Basic • Games

Used in: Agility, rally

This is in the “game” category because, like many games, its purpose is to keep the players on their toes. For many dogs, their walks become monotonous: the same boring streets with the usual dogs, the same shrubs to pee on, and so on. By practicing Where’d You Go? with your dog, your movements become unpredictable, so your dog will learn to pay attention to where you’re going. This activity turns your surroundings into an obstacle course, so you’ll have to stay on your toes, too!

In agility, the dog needs to be in tune to where his handler is and what she is cuing. At the same time, he must be aware of his own speed and direction. It’s a balance known as handler focus versus obstacle focus. A dog that focuses only on his handler may run off course or injure himself, while one that is too absorbed in his own movements may miss the handler’s cue.

Where’d You Go? is useful for dogs who:

walk with their handlers on leash

forget that their handlers are walking with them

get distracted by things in the environment

get caught around street signs or other obstacles

HOW TO DO WHERE’D YOU GO? GAME 1

1. With your dog on leash, start walking quickly. Keep the leash loose. Be aware of your hand position; you don’t want to unintentionally create leash tension.
