Left â Simple lightweight drapery at the windows screens views and protects privacy during the daytime, with heavier outer curtains blocking out any unwelcome light and providing greater warmth and better sound insulation at night.
Below â Pale-toned décor keeps the overall effect of this bedroom light and spacious. Conversely, cramped surroundings, bright colours, fussy patterns and detailing can be overstimulating, making it difficult to sleep.
LIGHTING
Natural light
It is important to pay attention to the quality of light in bedrooms, even though we will be unconscious for most of the time we are in them. Natural light has a profound effect on our circadian rhythms: it sets our body clocks. Unless you are one of those people who need total darkness to drop off to sleep, translucent window treatments â lightweight drapery or cotton blinds (shades) â will screen views and protect privacy while allowing the stimulus
of morning light to shine through. Adjustable louvred blinds (shades) are also very effective and generate moody bands of light and shade.
A good quality of natural light also goes hand in hand with a sense of spaciousness. Light colours, and surfaces and finishes that are light
in tone â such as pale wood flooring, natural-fibre coverings or neutral carpeting and smooth white or
off-white walls â make the most of whatever light the bedroom receives, and spread it around. Unlike other areas of the home, where pale or
all-white décor can be impractical, the bedroom is not an area of heavy traffic or round-the-clock use.
