We can conclude that the numerous outbreaks of the disease in the Byzantine and Arab Middle East could be explained in terms of enzootic presence in the area. Moreover, the existence of a natural focus on the Arabo-Byzantine border of the time should be considered very likely. As for Palestine, it appears to have suffered due to its geographic position at the crossroads of contemporary trade routes.

The monumental Plague manual of the WHO, which was edited in 1954 by Robert Pollitzer (1885 – 1968) and lists the natural foci of the disease in the 20th century, contains special references to the Middle East. More specifically:
