That morning, Mum wanted to go with Tim on a tour of the farm as he fed all the animals. It wasn’t something Seth would have chosen to do. He wasn’t a kid any more.

“Please, Seth,” Mum begged. “I want to feed the goats.”

“Really?” Seth pulled an embarrassed face.

“Really. And the ducks. I like ducks.”

His mum sounded like she was a kid now. A little girl, not his mum. But Seth understood that if she could find anything to take her mind off her test results then she should do it.

“OK.” Seth put on a broad smile. “Let’s go.”

They joined Tim in the barn with buckets of animal feed.

There were some other guests there – two younger children with their grandfather. Both hopping about with excitement.

The barn was full of sacks of feed, six canoes on a rack and – on the other side of a half-door – a horse gazing at them with solemn black eyes.

As his mum was feeding the goats, Tim came to stand next to Seth.

“I was talking to my sister first thing this morning,” the farmer said.

“The football coach?”

“That’s right. Helena. The under-13s have training this afternoon at the Roundhill. Then a match tomorrow.”

“Great,” Seth said. “I’ll go and watch.”

“Well.” Tim raised his eyebrows. “Helena was hoping you’d maybe … play? She’s missing a couple of players. If you fancied a spot on the bench, she’d be so pleased. What do you think?”

“It’s shame Galip and Aylan won’t play,” Seth said. “It would be better if it was them, not me.”

“It would. But maybe it’ll encourage them if they see you taking part?”

Seth looked at his mum. She was kneeling down, her hands out flat as a goat hoovered up the feed. The two little kids were leaning into her, laughing. She had a big smile on her face too. Seth hadn’t seen her look this relaxed – or well – in ages.

“OK,” Seth said, turning back to Tim with a grin of his own.
