Once back in the car, Max commented. “Poison would be a likely selection for people who lack the physical strength to carry out a more strenuous murder plot. Jonah Griffin falls into that category.”

“I totally agree. While he seems to have accepted his fate, that could be a ploy to cover up his anger—and involvement. Few would suspect him in his feeble condition.”

Max paused. “So either it’s personal or someone intended Malcolm’s death to cast a negative light on Neverminex. We need to speak to Weston’.”

Joy flipped open her laptop and typed in “Pesticide Defense League.” She whistled the moment she saw the header—blocks of images sat side-by-side: a tractor spraying a field, dead bees, dead butterflies, a cracked egg in a nest. Words splayed across the images: “Save Lives. Ban Pesticides.” Joy confirmed, “Weston has posted a list of what the group considers to be the most dangerous pesticides on the market, not just in America but worldwide. For each, the website lists their harmful effects on the human population and the environment—like which ones show up in the water supply or cause neurological damage to growing children—and the website provides contact information for each company. There’s also a protest email set up—fill in your email address and name, hit send, and a protest email goes out to the California senators. Another goes to the CEO of the largest retailer of pesticides.”

“It sounds like a hit list.”

“It is. There are links to recent blogs that cite the danger of neonic pesticides, linking them to the decline of bee populations, and there’s one on the recent failed attempt to ban Neverminex. The Neverminex article suggests that Locust Chemical paid millions to lobbyists to help fund a study to examine the carcinogenic and environmental properties of Neverminex. Max, Weston isn’t playing around. They’re waging war on pesticide manufacturers.” Joy closed her computer.

“The murder of Malcolm Moore, CEO of Locust Chemical, would be a good place to start. It’s a clear call to action. And if that’s true, we’re looking at more murders to come.”

“But killing Malcolm won’t kill his company.”

“No,” said Max. “But activists are more concerned with sending a deadly message—‘Watch your back, you might next.’”
