Inside his mason jar prison, Jiminy slumped down. He shook his head. He had been trying to escape ever since Honest John and Gideon had trapped him in there, but it was no use. He couldnât get out.
âWell, I guess this is it,â he said. âThis is how it ends.â He frowned. He had always thought he would live a long and full life. Perhaps find a nice place, settle down, learn a few new songs. But then he had gone and gotten involved with that Blue Fairy and the conscience business, and now look at him! Trapped in a glass jar during a rainstorm.
Beneath him, the ground began to shake. A rickety wagon train pulled by two exhausted mules approached him. Jiminyâs eyes widened as he looked up. âAs I live and breathe,â he said, reading the sign on the side of the first wagon. ââStromboliâs Puppet Show.â I wonder if Pinoke ever got a chance toâ¦â Jiminy pulled a spyglass from his vest and peered at the caravan. He scanned the lead wagons, then the back ones. Then he looked at the middle one. Through a tiny window, Jiminy saw Pinocchio. The wooden boy was swinging back and forthâin a birdcage.
âPinoke!â Jiminy yelled. âHey, Pinocchio! Over here! Itâs Jiminy.â It was no use. His voice was muffled by the thick glass of the mason jar. He was so close and yet so far.
Crack!
Startled, Jiminy looked around.
Thwack! Crunch!
As the caravan moved down the road, it hit a patch of loose rocks and pebbles. The wheels kicked up a few of them, which hit the mason jar. Cracks appeared in the glass, and then a particularly large pebble slammed into the jar. It was just big enough and strong enough to tip the mason jar right over.
Jiminy was free!
âWell, Iâll be,â Jiminy said.
Opening his umbrella, Jiminy focused. He needed to get to that wagon. He raced after Stromboliâs caravan. Luckily, the narrow streets slowed the wagons, and Jiminy was able to catch up. He closed his umbrella, hopped onto the wagon holding Pinocchio, and squeezed himself through the barred peephole on the wagonâs back door. He looked around the room. When he spotted Pinocchio, he let out a âpsst.â
Pinocchioâs head lifted.
âPinocchio! Listen up!â Jiminy whisper-shouted.
Now Pinocchio sat straighter, recognizing his friendâs voice. When he spotted the rain-soaked cricket, a smile lit up his face. âJiminy!â he said happily. âGee, am I glad to see you! Stromboli locked me in this cage.â
Using a hanging marionette as a rope, Jiminy swung to the birdcage and fiddled with the lock. It wouldnât budge. âI guess this isnât what you signed up for when you decided to be a famous actor, is it?â Jiminy said. His voice was kind, but his message was clear: Pinocchio shouldâve listened to him.
Pinocchio hung his head, ashamed. âItâs not my fault,â he said, even though they both knew that wasnât entirely the case. âI never wanted to be famous.â
Suddenly, Pinocchioâs nose grew an inch.
Jiminy shook his head, not sure if it was just a trick of the light.
