“Hey, Mom?”

“Yes, sweetie?”

“I wanted to know …” Tracy was not sure how to say it. “I guess … I wonder if you would come with me today. It would make me feel good.”

Her mom sprayed water on some beans. “I bet it would make you feel good. But it wouldn’t make me feel good. You know what I think of pageants.”

Tracy felt a lump in her throat. “I hoped maybe you’d changed your mind.”

Mrs. Jones softened. “I know this is hard for you. Be strong. Okay?”

Tracy wasn’t sure how strong she could be. Then a car horn tooted twice. “Well. That’s Ashley. I’ve got to go.”

“You’re in good hands with her. See you later.”

Tracy headed for Ashley’s car. She was still sad. Her mom didn’t even wish her good luck.
