If time was passing slowly before, then after my conversation with Dad it practically stood still. Mum came in later with a glass of flat lemonade, which was how I knew Dad hadn’t told her I was faking it. She always brought me flat lemonade when I’d been puking.

I didn’t know what to do. Maybe I was overreacting. So Cory knew I’d made it up about going to the doctor, big deal. That didn’t mean I was necessarily lying about being sick, did it?

Unfortunately, although I could and was lying to everyone else in my life, I could only lie to myself for so long. Especially when eight o’clock came and went, and then nine o’clock, and Cory didn’t call me like he said he would. He didn’t even text me. I was too scared to text him. I didn’t know what to say without making it worse.

I thought I wouldn’t fall asleep, but I was startled awake when my phone finally beeped. The room was dark. My head felt thick.

I reached for my phone, my heart pounding. And then it felt like the boulder was back in my stomach, because the text wasn’t from Cory at all.

FYI Cory is really trashed. He seems pretty wound up. Big W.
