CHAPTER 7

Brady sat looking at the x-ray up on the light box. He had been staring at it off and on for the last ten minutes. His mind was wandering again to another subject that he had tried unsuccessfully to put fully out of his mind. It had been almost two weeks since the “accidental” kiss with Dana. All he could remember about that night was how they had laughed, and how fast the laughter had turned lethal to his libido. Now that he knew exactly how soft that hair felt, and sweet those lips tasted, he was unable to keep his mind from replaying the event.

She had been courteous and friendly each time they had seen each other since that night. She had made sure they were never alone, a fact that only he noticed he was certain. But it was irritating him, and he almost wished that she would scream or rant at him. He thought, given time and exposure, this thing between them would diminish. Maye god willing she would find someone else and be out of his reach. He could try and reason with his brain, but all other organs with a dog in this hunt were not listening. Finally, mentally shaking himself out of the doldrums, he tried to concentrate on the x-ray.

She would be bringing Beau in for his school check-up in a few minutes. It would be the first time in weeks that she would be in the same room with him, with only the four year old between them to keep the tension at bay. Luckily, Beau was bouncing energy, and was good at keeping all eyes trained on him.

A soft knock on his door got his attention.

“Dr. Abott, there is a gentleman here that would like to see you.” The receptionist said. “His name is Jason Moore?” she said half questioning.

“Sure, I’ll come out.”

Jason had been a friend since they both had been in middle school, but one he spent little time with these days. He and his lovely new wife had welcomed their first child five years ago and had followed that up with two more at twelve and eighteen month respective intervals. His family was Jason’s main focus, and so the fishing, drinking, and general merriment in which they once partook had gone to the wayside.

Brady walked through the door to the waiting area. “Jason,” he extended his hand which was quickly engulfed. “How long has it been?”

“Too long. Sorry we couldn’t make the Fourth of July this year, Gina’s dad had surgery on his knee a few weeks before. So we drove up to see him.”

“Of course. How are Gina and the kids?”

“Doing great. Getting big. Gabe is getting ready to start pre-K this year.”

“Wow, time flies. So what brings you by?”

“I am on the Soccer League here in town, and we are recruiting sponsors for the teams. I was hoping your clinic might sponsor a peewee league. You get your name on the jerseys and can place a banner out on the field.
