Sharpening Part of an Image

To make certain parts of an image really stand out—such as areas that have interesting texture—you can add additional sharpening to those areas. For example, one of the most useful portrait-retouching techniques you’ll ever learn is to accentuate your subject’s eyes and lips, as shown in Figure 12-10.

If you’ve followed the advice in the previous section about sharpening a Smart Object or merging several layers into a stamped layer specifically for sharpening, then you’re more than halfway there. If you went the Smart Object (or Smart Filter) route, you automatically got a layer mask (shown back in Figure 12-3). If you merged several layers into one, you need to add the mask yourself by clicking the circle-within-a-square icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.
