Chapter Eighteen

2019

I can’t possibly describe just how excited I was to be planning my wedding after so many years of simply dreaming about it. I had long had an idea at the back of my mind as to what my dream wedding would look like. I had pictured it as almost a fairytale, with all of my friends and family nestled around me as they treated me like the princess I had always wanted to be. It would take place in a massive church, with grand organ music playing and some of the finest singers that I could afford. The reception would take place not too far away at a barn venue. We would string lights from the ceiling and people would dance all night.

I had always had that idea of what it would be like. Ever since I was a little girl playing with the few dolls I had. I had often thought about who would walk me up the aisle and part of me had another dream which involved my father coming back into my mother’s and my life. I smiled as I thought about all of these dreams now and breathed deeply as I continued to plan.

My actual wedding would be nothing like that.

It wasn’t that I was disappointed by this fact. Far from it. I was overjoyed to be marrying Julian and I was glad to be having a simple affair. It was realistic, after all, and would still be just as meaningful as the fairytale wedding I had dreamed of. The only difference would be that it would actually happen, and I was excited for that thought.

I planned it as best as I could. It would take place at the courthouse and would be relatively quick. As much as I had wanted a traditional Catholic wedding, I knew that this would be easier and faster, both of which were exactly what Julian and I were planning on. We needed to get married before the baby was born, that much was certain, so the faster we could get in and out of the wedding venue, the better.

At least, that is what I kept telling myself.

There wouldn’t be a reception in the traditional sense, as the wedding would take place in the middle of the day and we would only have two guests: Sam and Hannah. I asked Julian if he wanted to have a best man, but he assured me that it was enough to just have those closest to us in attendance. I thought about making reservations as some place simple so that we could, at the very least, enjoy a meal with everyone afterward. Julian agreed that this was a good idea and promised me that he would have the best honeymoon planned out for us after the festivities were over.

Part of me thought about inviting my mother to the ceremony, but I knew better than to fall into that trap. Julian had never asked me about my relationship with my mother and I was just as glad not to bring it up.
