Optic flow
It is important to remember that we are terrestrial creatures and we move around on a ground plane surface. As a consequence, it seems very likely that the motion perspective created by the ground plane surface when we move plays an important role in detecting its 3-D propertiesâfor example allowing us to walk or run over a sloping or an undulating surface without stumbling. As yet, there have been very few studies that have investigated this particular aspect of motion parallax. The changes in the optic array that are created by observer or object motion represent aspects of what is referred to as optic flow, and the elegant mathematical analyses of Jan Koenderink and Andrea van Doorn as well as Christopher Longuet-Higgins have confirmed that the transforming optic array provides information about the 3-D structure of objects and their layout. Optic flow also has the potential to provide us with information about our own movements in the visual world and examples of this can be seen in the way we maintain balance and in our perception of self-motion. These aspects will be discussed in detail in Chapter 6, but suffice to say that the experimental evidence supports the view that optic flow plays an important role in the maintenance of balance, the perception of self-motion, and the perceived direction of heading.
