I sometimes wonder why God lets some of these questions enter my mind. I don’t want to be disrespectful in wondering what I wonder. I’m definitely not doing it on purpose. I can’t seem to “cleanse them” from my thoughts, like the priests say I should. I know it’s their way of telling me to stop questioning how things have always been.

Maybe it’s the messaging: Follow the Ten Commandments and Treat Others as You Would Like Others to Treat You don’t seem to be working with people.

I think we all need updated directives from more recent conversations with God.

I now know my early childhood ideas about priests were misperceptions, based on the little information I had at the time. Now I know priests are just men like other men, with real bodies, vices, and flaws; men who have studied to become priests, but who remain men in all other ways. They preach: don’t have sex, unless you’re married, and only if you’re having sex for the purpose of having children.

But now I know some of them have sex. Some have sex with each other. And some have sex with us, their students. They don’t seem to have a problem with it while they’re doing it, then later they feel guilt and shame—until the next time they come into our doorless hallways.

‘El hábito no hace al monje.’

The habit does not make the monk.
