Stella’s eyes fluttered close, despite her determination to keep them open. It had been a long night. A patient attempted suicide by slicing open a wrist with a jagged piece of metal. It took them hours to discover where the piece had come from. The patient had managed to take the screw off the bottom of a hospital chair and had been sharpening an edge of the bracket in anticipation. The whole scenario was a nightmare, surely the type of incident that would get upper management involved. No one liked it when someone from Central Office started poking around and asking questions.

Yet like a fly to shit, Stella was summoned to Glaswell’s office shortly after she arrived home. She was too scared to refuse, which only made her hatred and animosity grow. This man had a way of always making her feel helpless.

His door sprung open and Stella bolted upright so her back was ramrod straight. No sense in letting him know her defenses were down. A haughty looking woman in a pinstripe pencil skirt and blazer strode out of Glaswell’s office carrying a leather briefcase. Her dark hair was pulled into a tight bun on top of her head, highlighting her angular features. Stella vaguely recognized her face, but could not remember where she had seen the woman before.

Malcolm Glaswell emerged behind her, looking harried and stressed. His hair, usually gelled to perfection, was in disarray and his tie was crooked. He glanced at Stella and blanched. Angling his body to block Stella from view, Glaswell placed his hand lightly on his companion’s back and guided her out of the administrative office with a fake smile plastered on his face. The woman’s stilettos echoed down the hall.

Stella breathed a small sigh of relief. If Glaswell was otherwise occupied, she could go home and sleep. Right as she stood up to leave the waiting area, his head popped in from the hallway. “Go wait in my office. I will only be a few more minutes,” he instructed.

She rolled her eyes, but acquiesced. No sense in poking the beast when he was clearly already on the fritz. She threw herself into the office chair and groaned. There wouldn’t be enough coffee in the world to get her through today.

It dawned on her that she had never been inside Glaswell’s office alone before. Maybe if she could find her own form of blackmail, his “coaching” sessions could stop and there would be no need for the hearing.

Stella began pulling open drawers and shuffling through papers. There was a filing cabinet, but it was locked and Stella could not find the key. She glanced at the door before attempting to log into his computer. It was also locked, but Stella tended to be lucky at guessing passwords. She checked the room for clues as to his interests. There were no personal photographs or mementos anywhere. He had a bachelor’s degree framed on the wall from a university Stella had never heard of, but that was the only thing that even identified the office’s occupant.
