AFTER HE’D HUNG UP ON JUSTICE, PARLAY PLACED THE CALL to the Angel. “We have a problem,” he’d said. “Actually. There are a few. The Cooler was found.”

“Infiltrated? I told you Clarion was no joke.”

“I guess you were right. Doesn’t matter though. He’s dead now.”

“Ken Clarion is dead?”

“You sound surprised.”

“Frankly, yes, I am. But never mind that. What’s the rest of the news?”

“Well, those enhanced interrogation tactics haven’t worked on the Target.”

“Oh, those techniques work. It’s your men getting them wrong. They’re not professionals.”

“You’re the one who said not to use professionals, to put together what I could on the ground.”

“I did?” the Angel asked.

“Absolutely." Parlay had always harbored fears about the Angel’s motives, even his general sanity, but the Symmetra deal had been too good to pass up. Now, the doubts were beginning to come back to him. With every flip comment, every backhand admission—perhaps not of incompetence but of carelessness—Parlay’s thoughts moved closer to imagining himself in black and white, of wondering how he’d get by in an environment controlled entirely by people he couldn’t control, blacks and Mexicans, Koreans and Latinos at that.

“Hmm, well, that may not have been the best way to go. We’ll have to make do, though. You know what I mean, Presence, chin up!”

“Listen, Angel, the point is I’m worried here. The Israelis have gone quiet.”

“How long?”

“A couple hours now.”

“All right, all right, Presence. You worry about the rest of this. I’ll deal with the Israelis.”

“You said you didn’t want to be involved directly.”

“I don’t. But you’re going to have your hands full.”

“With the Target?”

“And the Insider. You need to get your hands on him, too.”

“But I’m leaving the country,” Parlay had said. “I’m heading for the island. Anyway, he’s about to be taken into custody by Squires.”

“Right, and you can’t let that happen.”

“But that was the plan.”

“Maybe the Target doesn’t care if you hurt her. Maybe she doesn’t even care if you kill her. But make her watch a friend under duress and see what happens.”

“We’re talking about killing again, aren’t we?”

“We’re over the Rubicon, Presence.”

“I think I understand, Angel. I’m just not sure how to get my hands on the Insider without ID getting in the way.”

“Don’t worry. I’ve got something they’ll never suspect.”

“What’s that?”

“Airmail.”
