As they walked out of the restaurant, they bumped into Nathan Battle, the local sheriff. Jack shook hands with him. Nathan was about Jack’s height, with close-cropped dark brown hair and kind, brown eyes. He was one of the first friends Jack had made in Royal. Nathan was always fair and gracious, and played an excellent game of poker.

“Well, well, well, look who we have here,” Nathan said, grinning. “The town’s newest k!smet connection.”

Jack grinned and introduced him to Willa. “You on duty?” Nathan was dressed in his khaki sheriff’s uniform.

“Yeah, a couple of teenagers tricked one of the tourists to buy them beer. Ol’ Fred wasn’t too happy.”

Jack turned to Willa. “That’s the monthly crime spree here.”

Nathan laughed. “Normally that would be true but with the Diamond Gate necklace going on display soon, we’ve got a lot of tourists coming into town, and people tend to get a little crazy before the holidays. I have the sweetest couple locked up.”

“Why?” Willa asked. It was clear Nathan was itching to tell the story.

“The guy, Larry, is a local and he was finally ready to propose to his girlfriend, so he decides to get this big billboard made. He puts it up in front of Frankie Junior’s shop thinking the guy has closed for the holidays like he always does. Except Frankie decided to stay open later this year because of all the extra tourists here to see the diamonds.”

Nathan shook his head with amusement. “Now, Frankie decided to be gracious and leave the billboard cause he didn’t want to mess up the proposal. But the girlfriend doesn’t live here and her flight gets delayed. Frankie thinks the proposal has happened, so he removes the billboard and throws it in the dumpster. One of the out-of-towners sees the billboard and decides to rescue it. Larry sees the guy trying to take the billboard and, without thinking, tackles him.”

“Can’t blame the guy.” Willa said.

Nathan shrugged. “I know, but I had to break it up. I go to take him in and the girlfriend says I can’t take him without taking her. So they’re both cooling their heels in cell 3.”

Jack couldn’t help but laugh. “You gotta let them go.”

“Oh, I will. I’m leaving them in for a few hours so Larry learns his lesson.”

“The girlfriend lives out of town?” Willa inquired.

“She’s from LA. They met on vacation and fell in love. Took them a while to figure out how to make it work. It’s a sweet story.”

“What did they do?” Willa was listening intently and it warmed Jack’s heart. He made a note to introduce her to Dev and Caitlyn, who had also found a way to make it work. It didn’t escape his notice that she seemed worried about their geography. If things did work out between them, he’d never ask her to give up her career. It meant a lot to her and he recognized that she’d have to be based out of a major city. But Dallas was not
