“Mr Pace has the penthouse in the new marina apartment complex. He’s been living there for eight months,” Nnadi said as she drove down the Rodovia dos Imigrantes, or Immigrants Highway, the main road to the port town of Santos.

“Does he do much business here in Brazil?”

Nnadi replied, “His tax return last year stated he made about the right amount of money to live in the penthouse. His source of income was listed as investment banker. We don’t have much more detail than that.”

In the back seat, Eva and Nash exchanged glances. The closer they got to the target, the more sceptical Nash became. It wasn’t just the convenient—no matter how much Harry protested—uncovering of Sikes’ potential alias, there was more to it. If all trace of Sikes had been wiped off the planet five years ago, then how could his name appear on a laptop hidden in a safehouse?

Were all these clues laid out for Nash to find in some elaborate and unknown scheme, or was it that they were simply damn good spies? Or was it all a useless wild goose chase? He had no way of telling. But Nash had survived long enough to retire from espionage by trusting his instinct, and his gut told him something was off. If only his gut was a little more specific. Regardless, their operation was on less assured footing with each passing minute.

“Where exactly are you taking us?” Nash hoped his voice didn’t carry the doubt he felt.

“I thought you’d want to scope the penthouse from a distance first—I assumed you’d want to get straight into it. I’ve booked a table at a restaurant across the water with a good view of it. I thought we could eat and discuss next steps. I have a plan I’d like to discuss with you both. Plus, they do a kick-arse paella.”

The fact Nnadi had already picked a restaurant overlooking their target, an hour’s drive away from São Paulo struck Nash as odd. Then again, he could be overthinking everything. He turned to Eva to see if she had caught any of Nash’s doubts, but she was sitting passively, apparently indifferent to Nnadi’s dinner reservations.

Nash wished he could punch his guts to either stop casting doubts over everything or provide some concrete answers. His gut remained mute on the matter. That was, until he thought of paella and his stomach grumbled. Not exactly what he had in mind.

“How long have you been with MI6, Agent Nnadi?” Eva asked.

“Oh, coming up to five years now. A field agent for three. All those spent in South America. The last two I’ve been stationed here.”

“You like it?” Again, Nash hoped his tone was friendly.

“Oh, for sure. The current government keeps us busy. If it’s not an impeachment, it’s some other scandal. Our field office is pretty solid, can’t complain. I’m due to rotate out at the end of the year. I’m hoping Washington, but so is every other mug on the continent, so who knows?”

At the mention of MI6 politics, Nash once again wondered how he’d become embroiled in it all over again.
