CHAPTER TWENTY

Alrekur

I stopped my frantic pacing and stared out the large picture window. The sky was now a deep brown with orange clouds sprinkled throughout.

"Where are they?" I shouted and turned around.

Servants jumped and ran around. The other Fyrsturae were sitting around my games room, discussing the situation. None of them even flinched at my outburst.

Soren glanced up at me. "We know everyone is safe. Eylin is herself again, and Clara promised she'd urge her to come back here."

I ran my hands through my hair. "Right, because we know how well my daughter follows directions."

He came over and whacked my back. "Brother, she overcame being a slayer. That was something we never thought possible. If she can do that, she can handle… this." He gestured outside.

"We don't even know what that is! Have you looked around? Nokken—everywhere. I can see their hideous yellow eyes. Check for yourself." I pushed him toward the window.

"I see them."

"And you think my daughter and wife are safe?" I exclaimed.

He turned to me and leaned against the wall. "Alexis knows better. She's learned a lot since the days of the nokken. Besides, we have a lot more to worry about than those irritating things."

"My point exactly! All of our enemies are being resurrected—every last one. And the two people I care about most are out there. Had I a clue to my Sonnast's whereabouts, I would jump up and find her. I'm not running after a false lead like Italy." Pressure built in my eyes. "I can't believe she led me on a goose chase like that."

"Can you blame her?" Soren tilted his head.

"You think I was wrong to keep the previous slayers from her?"

"She had a right to know. I'm surprised you weren't concerned about your children turning into slayers."

I narrowed my eyes and stepped closer to him. "Did you have concerns, brother?"

He didn't budge. "Actually, yes. The same gene pools that created the other slayers coming together again. It was hard not to worry."

Pressure exploded in my irises. "Why didn't you say anything?"

"You declared history changed. Or have you forgotten? You said anyone who brought up the slayers would be put to death immediately. I chose my life with Svana. Figured you were vampire enough to deal with the repercussions of your actions." He stared me down, as though daring me to respond.

I grabbed his neck and shoved him against the wall. "How dare you?" I shoved my forearm against his throat.

Soren choked. "You threaten people into following your orders, brother, and there are consequences to that. I've told you that plenty of times in the past. You've made us more enemies than—"

"Enough!" I shoved him toward the fireplace.

"Would you two grow up?" Asdis asked. "We have to figure out what we're going to do."

I pulled a dagger from my pocket and threw it at her. She ducked, and it lodged into a wall behind her.

Halldor flew across the room and stopped only an inch from me. "Try that again, and you'll find yourself with a new enemy.
