EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
A similar service response was found in relation to childrenâs needs in other aspects of their development. For example, attempts were made to encourage regular school attendance as illustrated by the case of Lynn, aged eight years (see pp.51â52 and p.58).
Identified issue. [The social workerâs record notes] at the time of the referral concerns expressed at lack of attendance at school and poor time-keeping, signs of neglect, dirty clothes, hungry and smelling of body odour. [The assessment noted] Lynnâs speech is a matter of concern and she will soon have an assessment completed by a speech therapist.
Service provided. [The social workerâs case closure report shows the results of the intervention] Lynn now attends school regularly, speech therapy programme completed with success, 1â1 sessions still ongoing in school, family have kept all appointments and attend family group meetings. Both Surestart and Homestart involved with family.
Lynn lives with her learning-disabled mother at her grandmotherâs home; her aunt also lives there.
Services were also provided to meet childenâs needs in relation to other developmental dimensions as the following examples illustrate.
