Theoretical Background

To explore factors predicting Korean adolescents’ sexual behavior, this study employs an ecological perspective (Bronfenbrenner, 1986). Bronfen brenner proposed that intrafamilial processes are affected by extra-familial conditions, with intrafamilial processes, in turn, affecting each family member. This framework has been used to examine adolescents’ sexual activity, implying that risk factors at the individual level and at environmental levels are related to the greater risk of sexual behavior (Small & Luster, 1994; Perkins, Luster, Villarruel, & Small, 1998). The present study utilizes variables from the individual level, the relationship level, the family level, and the extra-family level in order to investigate Korean adolescents’ sexual behavior.
