âLetâs get back to campus,â I say wearily. The nightâs activities are fatiguing me beyond belief.
Kayden shakes his head and blinks several times. He walks over to the jorogumo, and I scowl, but then he bypasses her for the cache of bones. Slowly, he digs them out, and the resulting mountain is both impressive and disheartening.
âHow many people do you think she killed?â I ask.
âHow many men you mean,â Kayden says bitterly. âI donât know. There are a ton of bones from a body that are missing. I doubt thereâs even one complete skeleton here, but there are so many femursâ¦â
âMaybe she ate the smaller bones,â I suggest. âYou know. Like cows. Donât they eat rocks to aid with digestion?â
âNo. Theyâre mammals. They donât have a gizzard. Youâre thinking of birds.â
âBirds, cowsâ¦â I wave my arm. âI donât want to stay here any longer. You want to? Fine. Iâll wait outside.â
He doesnât tarry and follows me out of the cave and up the stairs.
âDo you think she dug this herself?â he asks.
I glance over my shoulder to see him soaking in the steps embedded into the stone. He's amazed by what she built. Seriously?
Rushing ahead, I leave the den of evil behind and speed-walk away from it. Kaydenâs long strides allow him to catch up to me easily, but I ignore him. Immature? Maybe, but I also donât want to say anything right now. My emotions are all over the place, and until I can get my head on right and start to think clearly, it wouldnât be fair. Iâm liable to say something Iâll regret come the morning.
âI donât know what happened,â Kayden says.
âWe can talk later,â I say stiffly.
But he doesnât listen. âI was walking around, trying to find⦠As it grew later, I started to hear some music. I couldnât find where it was coming from. No one else seemed to hear it, but I couldnât get it out of my head. I had to find the source, andââ
âSeriously, Kayden. I just want to getââ
âMirella,â a smooth, familiar voice says.
I halt abruptly, and Kayden staggers into me. Heâs talking like normal, but heâs still feeling lingering effects from the jorogumo, thatâs for sure.
âGodfrey,â I say and nod curtly.
"I've been worried about you," the dark-haired stranger says. In his hand is the coffee cup he purchased. He notices me looking at it, and he shakes the cup. "I drank it all as I looked for you."
âWhy were you looking for her?â Kayden asks. Heâs almost growling.
Curiously, I eye my boyfriend. He's usually so laid-back and chill. He wasn't even this defensive with Darius. What's got him all riled up? Yes, Godfrey isn't who he appears to be, but I got away from him once. I can do it again and without Kayden's help for that matter.
âI was worried, like I said,â Godfrey says.
âIf you know Mirella, you know she can handle herself,â Kayden says.
âMore than you can,â I mumble.
Kaydenâs shoulders slouch, and he looks away. I donât mean to embarrass him, but Iâm frustrated.
