Not even the cows made a sound in the pasture as Ursula made her way to the back of Remy’s house and knocked on the door. When he didn’t answer after the third knock, she tried the knob. It turned so she went inside, dripping cold water on the throw rug inside the door. She could hear water running in the shower and Remy was singing “In Case You Didn’t Know” at the top of his lungs. The lyrics talked about her having his heart a long, long time ago. Was he thinking about Ursula or about Vivian, though? Was he washing the smell of Vivian from his body before he came to see Ursula?

“No! I won’t go there,” she whispered.

“Ursula?” Remy’s voice jerked her back into reality. “What are you doing here? Good Lord! You are wet and shivering. Here, come closer to the fire, and”—he jerked a blanket from the back of the sofa and wrapped it around her shoulders—“I’ll get a towel from the bathroom for your hair. Did you walk over here in this freezing rain?” he asked as he hurried down the hall without waiting for an answer.

He wore a T-shirt and a different pair of pajama pants than he had had on earlier that morning. His dark hair was still wet, and he hadn’t shaved. His eyes were worried, but then they should be if he’d spent the night with Vivian.

“I did.” She raised her voice above the lump still in her throat.

He returned with a towel and wrapped it around her hair, then led her over to the fireplace. “Sit on the floor, and I’ll work on your hair until it’s dry. What’s this all about? Are you breaking up with me?” Remy asked.

“I don’t know,” she answered. “Maybe you should be breaking up with me.”

“Why would I do that?” he asked.

“I was here, Remy,” she said. “I saw Vivian leave.”

Remy reached across the sofa and took her hand in his. “Why didn’t you just come on into the house and talk to me? Don’t you know that you can trust me? Trust is the foundation for a relationship.”

“You were half-naked, and she…” Ursula’s voice caught in her throat.

“And she had nothing but a skimpy, sexy thing under her coat,” he said, “but I didn’t even let her in the door. I told her that I was dating you and had probably been in love with you for twenty years. Then I told her to leave.” He tossed the towel on the floor and gathered her into his arms. “Give me your trust, and I will never betray you, and that’s a promise that could be written in stone.”

“Is that a proposal?” she asked.

“No, darlin’, it’s a vow,” he answered. “When I propose, you won’t have to wonder about it. You will know it’s real.”

She buried her face in his shoulder. “But she really would make a better ranch wife than I would. I’m preoccupied with…”

He laid a finger on her lips, then tipped her chin up for a kiss.
