“I’m going to miss you.”

Skylar smiled, belying his true feelings at the moment. He had been drafted into the military and being sent God-knows-how-many thousand miles away; this was his last night home. He took a deep breath, which to Jeannie seemed like a sigh, and pulled her closer. The smell of her shampoo and her cherry lip gloss filled his head. He didn’t even need to say the words. He couldn’t, in fact.

He was scared. And he wanted to tell her just that. He wanted to tell her that he’s afraid he’ll come back missing an arm or leg or with a bad eye. That he’s afraid to make new friends, and then bury them days after. That he’s afraid he won’t be able to come back at all.

“I’ll be back before you know it” was what he said instead, squeezing her tight.

She didn’t say another word, and he liked that, somewhat. He liked that he could just hold her quietly and not have to answer questions about what could happen in a month, three months, or twelve. His mind was already turbulent enough as it is. Still, aside from his recent worries, there wasn’t anything that he didn’t tell Jeannie after all. There were no secrets between them, and nothing that he ever wanted to tell her had been left unsaid.

He held her close all night long, knowing they’d be saying goodbye in the morning.

Little did he know, he’d be saying goodbye for good.
