the newsreader was saying.

‘Eh?’ said Neil. ‘Bamboo? That doesn’t sound like your dad!’

Cal prodded him to be quiet.

‘Escaped? Animal?’ Cal repeated.

Pudding started humming loudly. She scraped her chair back and bustled over to the sink.

‘Shhh, Pudding!’ said Cal. ‘Stop humming. They said an animal had escaped . . .’ Then a thought occurred to him. ‘Pudding?’

said the newsreader.

‘Pandas come from China,’ Neil remarked.

‘What’s going on?’ Tabby said, looking up from her scribbles.

‘PUDDING!’ Cal cried. ‘Have you ESCAPED from the zoo? I thought they’d sent you here!’

Crash! A mug fell off the draining board.

‘Oops, how very clumsy! I meant to put the kettle on,’ said Pudding, flapping her paws as she turned this way and that. ‘Nothing like a nice cup of tea with a spoonful of—’

‘SHHHHHH!’ said everyone.
