After Larkin broke the connection, Will sat back restlessly in his chair. He felt uncomfortable and edgy, as if he would explode if he moved the wrong way.

The mystery surrounding Hester—or whoever the man ultimately turned out to be—was a step in the right direction. He felt that in his bones.

He glanced through the door at the desk where Frank had always sat. The loss descended upon Will like a heavy blanket.

Even if he solved the puzzle—when, he told himself, not if—Frank would still be dead. The realization was sobering.

Then he saw Frank’s Bible lying on his desk. Frank’s words filled his mind again, imploring him to turn to God during his time of need.

Slowly, almost in awe, Will took Frank’s Bible in his hands. He knelt there on the floor of his office and bowed his head in prayer.

“God, I know you know the kind of man I’ve been,” Will said in a hoarse whisper. “I know I can’t hide anything from you. Not even my doubts and fears.” He hesitated, uncertain about how to go on. But the words seemed to keep coming to him. “I’m away from my wife and children, God, and I need you to help me be strong while I sort that out. In the meantime, I can feel that I’m at a crossroads in my life. Help me make the right choices. Lead me in the direction you would have me go.”

He remained on his knees, trembling and afraid.

Then a quiet strength filled him, nourishing him and lifting his pain and his worries. Relief flooded over him, and Will turned loose his fears. They would return, he knew, but he would be better prepared to deal with them when they did.

“Thank you, God,” he whispered as tears fell down his cheeks. “Thank you for remembering me.”
