Henry

I left Trouble in bed this morning, after calling one of my guys to come watch the house—without her knowing, of course—while I head to the office to do some more digging on this person funneling money into Isaac’s account. I plan to call a private investigator, too.

Given Liam’s condition last night when we left, I decide to swing by his place first since it’s not very far from the office. I park in the building’s private garage and head for the residential elevators, punching in the code to his floor.

I exit the elevator and walk past the other two apartments he shares on this floor to the end of the hallway where his door is. Slipping my key into the lock, I turn it, push the door open, and walk inside the unlit apartment. Smooth drywall brushes my fingertips as I search for the switch and flip it on. Under the white light, I see a small pot tumbled on its side, but otherwise, everything seems in order.

Boots click against the oak flooring as I walk through the short entryway to the living area. His old guitar leans against the sofa, and I’m unsure if it’s a good or bad thing. Liam has an ass load of talent, but after his band fell apart, and his ex-wife’s new husband blackballed him, he stopped playing as often. I think it hurt too much at first. Music was the love of his life only behind Casey, and it let him down. Then it became a reminder of everything he lost. In some ways, I think he blamed it because, despite everything, he loved Krista. She just never deserved him or Casey.

“Liam, brother, are you alive?” I call out with a petty chuckle, remembering all the times he did the same to me, knowing my head would be pounding from a hangover. “Better be decent. I’m coming in.”

I swing the door open and turn on his lights, wishing I hadn’t. Dear fucking God I don’t know if I want to kill him or myself. My breakfast is trying to crawl up my throat.

“Don’t you knock?” she says as she steps out of his bathroom.

“I don’t need to knock. I have a key, unlike you. Don’t you have some other snake hole to crawl back to? Like maybe the one you share with your husband?”

She huffs and spins back for the bathroom.

“Ugh. Why is everything so fucking loud?” Liam groans into his pillow.

“Why don’t you wake up and explain why your room smells like dead fish?”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” He moans like a dying dog as he tries to turn over as if he’s in agony, and it’s obvious he isn’t registering the second voice in the room. Once he does, the misery he thinks he feels now is going to be much worse. “Why is the damn bed spinning?”

“That’s what happens when you drink the bar.” I cut my eyes toward his skank ex, who walks into the room dressed in her designer hookerware.
