Chapter 41

“Knoxx, aren’t you coming with us?”

“Go with Finn. I’ll be out in just a minute; I just need to have a quick word with Grant.”

Finn squeezed my hand, coaxing me towards the door. “Knoxx will be fine, let’s just get out to the truck.” Stepping out into the parking lot, Finn increased our pace. He opened the passenger door for me, not waiting for me to settle in the seat before shutting it and running around to hop in. Starting the truck, Finn pulled out of the space, leaving the truck idling in front of the restaurant doors.

“Finn, what’s going on?” I asked, noticing the slight quiver in my voice. Finn must have noticed it too because he momentarily tore his eyes away from the front of the restaurant to look at me as he reassuringly squeezed my hand.

“Everything is going to be fine. Knoxx should be out any second. See, there he is now.” Finn squeezed my hand again, not letting go. Turning to look out the window I saw Knoxx walk out of the restaurant alone, he didn’t hurry the way we had.

“What Knoxx was trying to say,” Finn interjected, glancing at Knoxx in the mirror as he spoke, “was he was concerned by whatever he saw and can you please tell him what was happening.”

“Nothing was happening. You went to the bathroom. Knoxx went to order food. I went to the table and sat down. I was going to respond to text messages when Grant sat down and started using really lame pickup lines, then Knoxx showed up looking ready to kill someone, demanding I leave while Grant demanded I stay.”

“He was still trying to coax her name out of her when I walked up,” Knoxx informed Finn.

“You didn’t tell him who you are?”

“No, I told him his seat was taken and that his lines were lame. Do you want to tell me what’s going on?”

Finn sighed, “Grant isn’t a very nice person.” Knoxx scoffed in the back seat causing Finn to pause before continuing. “He plays on BSC’s football team and has a reputation for coming after girls hard and not taking no for an answer. He’s never been charged with anything or publicly accused, but the rumors are abundant. Knoxx didn’t want Grant taking an interest in you. The less he knows about you, the better.”

“I mean, thanks for looking out for me and
